Every day, our brains are bombarded by a barrage of notifications and an onslaught of information and new content to explore and learn Yet we're also subjected to a myriad of variables that distract us.

Key data on the use of mobile devices, the internet and social media provide some food for thought: having access to such vast amounts of different tools and information can lead to a strong feeling of cognitive disorientation.

There’s a reason for all of this.

What we call the attention curve is the short frame of time when our minds are physiologically able to concentrate on a certain topic and so are primed and ready for successful learning.

Attention sky rockets and peaks in about 7 minutes, and then begins to decrease.

Various cognitive psychology theories agree on one thing: if the cognitive load (i.e. the amount of information that our memory has to process within a certain period of time) is too high, it may use up the cognitive resources required to learn and become gridlocked.

In light of these studies and theories, this easybook provides some tips to help you learn in the best way possible, stress-free and enthusiastically.

With this book you’ll learn:

•    The inbuilt mechanisms of your brain that influence learning

•    How to manage cognitive load using two key tools: content segmentation and pacing

•    The 7Minutes solution, the cornerstones when it comes to accessible, micro and mobile online training.

?Tom:

Mosaicoelearning:

We made our first interview about two years ago. How is learning changed since then, and where is it going?

Tom:

I think the key with elearning is providing tools that are easy to use. This allows anyone who has the need to build elearning courses. With Articulate Storyline we’ve seen the next generation of elearning tools materialize. It offers a great entry point for the beginner and the sophistication for the more advanced elearning developer. Another change we see in the industry is more reliance on mobile devices. So the elearning developer needs to consider how to design the course, when it’s appropriate for mobile delivery, and what are the tradeoffs to create a course that works across mobile devices.

Mosaicoelearning:

You have already put your hands on Articulate Studio '13. What are your feelings on it, and its points of strength?

Tom:

Articulate Studio’13 has a lot of nice new features. We’ve already been showing some of them at recent conferences. I like the new interactions in Engage and the drag/drop capabilities in Quizmaker. I also like the new player because it will provide a lot more flexibility and all three applications (Presenter, Quizmaker, and Engage) share the same player. So courses will look more integrated. Of course, there’s a lot more to Studio.

If anyone is interested in participating in the beta, have them email beta@articulate.com and they’ll get instructions on what to do.

Mosaicoelearning:

What's the best suggestion to Storyline users who build scenarios?

Tom:

As far as building scenarios, I think it’s mostly about simplicity. Often we overbuild scenarios and probably don’t always need them. Developing an effective scenario is like writing a good story. There’s a difference between getting the mechanics down and writing a compelling story. The same for elearning scenarios. Sure you can create a scenario structure. But is the scenario interesting and effective? Many of the scenarios I see are cumbersome. So I lean on the side of simplicity. What’s the best way to get the learner to learn and apply what they learned. Scenarios are effective but may not always be the best way.

The other thing is that with Storyline I’d focus less on the branching and more on leveraging slide layers. It keeps it easy to manage and then all of the interactions are a single slide which are easy to save as reusable templates.

Mosaicoelearning:

We met in London and you had another chance to see what's happening with elearning in Europe. What are your thoughts?

Tom:

It was nice getting to connect with many of the blog readers in the UK and Europe. From my conversations I think they face the same types of challenges as their peers in the US—limited time and resources. That’s where connecting with others in the community really comes in handy. In a sense it extends your cubicle.
